Data recovery from system partition

Normally, a new hard drive is divided into several logical partitions. Thus, one disk is treated as if it were multiple disks for the sake of convenience and better performance of the drive. Isolated partitions increase data safety as well – if one partition gets corrupted, data on other partitions remain intact. Traditionally, the operating system and program files are separated from user files and are usually stored on an independent partition referred to as a system partition (Disk C: in Windows, for example). When you buy a new computer with a preinstalled operating system, you are likely to get a hard drive with the only partition which is the system partition where user files, program files and operating system are not separated.

Unfortunately, like any other partition, a system partition is exposed to the impact of viruses, sudden power cuts, software malfunctions, hardware failures and accidental deletion of files. However, a system partition (as a partition in which constant writing is performed) features extremely high possibility of overwriting deleted files, which makes their recovery impossible. For this reason, in case of an operating system failure it is highly recommended to stop working immediately and unplug the working computer without shutting it down, yet, even this doesn't guarantee successful recovery of user’s data.

If the system partition contains the operating system only, the problem can be simply solved by reinstalling it. But if important files are stored on the system partition or this was the only disk partition, the files will be gone for good after reinstalling an operating system.

For such cases, SysDev Laboratories advises using UFS Explorer Backup and Recovery CD which includes the Ubuntu Linux operating system and the UFS Explorer data recovery software for restoring lost files from an unbootable operating system or for cases when running the operating system is undesirable.
